Contemplative Photography & Poetry: Seeing and Saying the Present Moment

Photography and poetry share a common heart: both invite us to pause, notice, and respond to the world with presence. This class brings the two practices together as a form of contemplative artmaking. Whether you are an experienced photographer/poet or picking up your phone and pen for the first time, you are welcome here.

Each week we will:

  • Engage in in-class explorations—short photo walks, image-based meditations, and writing sessions.

  • Experiment with how photographs and poems can converse, deepen, and expand one another.

  • Share our work in a spirit of compassionate review—focusing not on critique, but on appreciation and discovery.

  • Receive weekly homework invitations that continue the practice in daily life.

You are welcome to use any camera—from a smartphone to a DSLR—and no prior experience with poetry is required. The emphasis is on openness, playfulness, and attention rather than technical perfection.
